<image:title>Anne Sofie von Otter & Brooklyn Rider - Following 2016’s acclaimed album So Many Things, we are teaming up once again with the insatiably curious Anne Sofie von Otter on a new project, featuring arrangements of songs by Franz Schubert (arranged by Osvaldo Golijov) and Rufus Wainwright interspersed between movements of Schubert’s dark and dramatic Death and the Maiden string quartet.</image:title>

<image:title>Anne Sofie von Otter & Brooklyn Rider - Featuring the eminent and fearless Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, this eclectic collaboration presents a program of contemporary art song, with music by iconic artists from both the classical and pop tradition, including Caroline Shaw, Nico Muhly, John Adams, Bjork, Sting, Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright, and Kate Bush. The album, released on Naive Classique in 2016, garnered critical acclaim and culminated in worldwide touring across North America, Europe, and Asia.</image:title>

<image:title>Healing Modes - The healing properties of music have been recognized from ancient Greek civilization to the field of modern neuroscience and expressed in countless global traditions. Healing Modes presents Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet opus 132 in a minor, which contains in its third movement one of the most profound expressions of healing in the string quartet repertoire, alongside five new commissions exploring the subject of healing from a wide range of cultural and historical perspectives. The composers include Reena Esmail, Gabriela Lena Frank, Matana Roberts, and Pulitzer Prize winners Du Yun and Caroline Shaw.</image:title>

<image:title>Kinan Azmeh & Brooklyn Rider - Celebrating a musical relationship spanning over a decade, we join Syrian clarinet virtuoso Kinan Azmeh in a unique collaborative program that expands the notion of the clarinet quintet into a 21st-century ensemble. Drawing from the deep well of creative talents within the group as well as our artistic circle, this project will explore various aspects of home and tradition from Syria, Brooklyn, and beyond. Includes works by Kinan Azmeh, Colin Jacobsen, and Ljova.</image:title>

<image:title>Martin Hayes & Brooklyn Rider - This project celebrates a decade-long musical friendship between acclaimed Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and Brooklyn Rider. Seeking to define common ground between two different bowed instrument traditions, The Butterfly features hauntingly beautiful arrangements of well-known tunes in the repertoire, transporting the listener and exploring the depth of expression within what could seem like deceptively simple melodies, but do not be fooled, for they belie a whole world and history behind them.</image:title>

<image:title>Gabriel Kahane & Brooklyn Rider - 2016 saw the release of The Fiction Issue, our collaboration with crackerjack singer-songwriter-composer Gabriel Kahane to universal praise among audiences and critics alike. Features the Carnegie Hall commission “The Fiction Issue” with the inimitable singer Shara Nova, “Come On All You Ghosts” (texts by Matthew Zapruder), and Bradbury Studies, a compositional unraveling of the song “Bradbury (304 Broadway)” from Kahane’s 2014 release, The Ambassador.</image:title>

The evening includes the duet “First Fall”, which Wendy and Brian first developed for Restless Creature (co-produced by The Joyce Theater in 2013). “First Fall” bears testament to the personal friendship and effervescent artistic chemistry which emerged from these two collaborators. Wendy and Brian further explore this relationship with Brooklyn Rider, who perform existing music from composers John Luther Adams, Jacob Cooper, Tyondai Braxton, Philip Glass, Evan Ziporyn and a new composition from Brooklyn Rider’s own Colin Jacobsen.</image:title>

<image:title>Chalk And Soot - Born out of a close collaboration with choreographer John Heginbotham and his company Dance Heginbotham, Chalk and Soot is a song cycle by our dear Colin that uses text from a book of prose poetry and woodcut illustrations by the painter Wassily Kandinsky called Klange (Sounds). With vocalists Shara Nova (of My Brightest Diamond) and Gabriel Kahane as muses, Colin sets the absurd, colorful, figurative, and pastoral scenes of Kandinsky’s proto-Dadaist poetry from 1912 (during the time of the Der Blaue Reiter – inspiration for our quartet’s name) in an eclectic manner, mirroring the diverse artistic inspirations of Kandinsky and his circle of artists that also included composer Arnold Schoenberg.</image:title>

<image:title>The Four Elements - The concept of four classical elements — Earth, Air, Fire, Water — as the foundation for the physical world was shared across ancient cultures, including those in Greece, Egypt, Persia, Babylonia, India, and beyond. In parallel, the unique musical ecosystem of the string quartet is a balance of four equal and living elements, collectively capable of giving voice to the vast beauties and mysteries of our world as well as the highly destructive forces which, taken together, represent the single greatest challenge of our time. In their latest project, Brooklyn Rider has assembled a novel program anchored by four works symbolically representing earth, air, fire, water. All created (or collected) within the last century of accelerated and unprecedented planetary change, Brooklyn Rider has additionally asked four brilliant composers* to write new works that reflect current realities and serve as a musical call to action.</image:title>

These artists have transcended the brutality through their work, work that represents love for humanity, love for democracy, and the inspiration to dream.

<image:title>The Four Elements (Copy) - The concept of four classical elements — Earth, Air, Fire, Water — as the foundation for the physical world was shared across ancient cultures, including those in Greece, Egypt, Persia, Babylonia, India, and beyond.

<image:title>Healing Modes (Copy) - The healing properties of music have been recognized from ancient Greek civilization to the field of modern neuroscience and expressed in countless global traditions.
<image:caption>"(Healing Modes)...could not possibly be more relevant or necessary than it is currently." –The New York Times "I don’t believe I’ve ever experienced the radical emotional range of Op. 132’s long, slow movement — with its liberating, dancing interjections — more intensely than when listening to the entirety of Healing Modes.” –The New York Times</image:caption>

Experimentalism is always more rewarding when it leads to resounding emotional depth, and this is as good an example as you'll find of a group of musicians achieving that ideal balance.” –Pitchfork “A knockout.” –LA Times “An unhurried delicateness...subtle virtuosity and unspoken emotion.” –RootsWorld</image:caption>
